Every morning at exactly 5:45 A.M, I hear it. The dreaded ringing of my alarm, nonstop until I get out of bed to turn it off. I shower, get dressed, and eat breakfast only to run out the door at 6:45 to catch my bus. By 7:00 I am in school, but by no means should I, or anyone else for that matter, be in school so early. Then, there’s also the bad days. The mornings where we wake up a little after 7:00, miss our buses, and arrive to homeroom a good 20 minutes late. Should students really be subjected to scrutinization for being “late” to classes that are simply scheduled too early?

Not only is starting school at 7:29 everyday a moral issue and a student complaint, it’s also just not beneficial towards students’ education. As teens begin to grow and develop, their bodies circadian rhythm (or “clock”) makes it harder to sleep early. Teens who used to be able to sleep at 8 or 9 P.M, may not be able to sleep until after 11 P.M  following puberty. This means they will also want to sleep in later, which they can not do due to school beginning so early in the morning. Scientific studies over the past three years have all led to one conclusion: the later school starts, the higher grades jump. After performing a controlled experiment on one group of high school students, it was determined that grade point averages were increasing when school began around 8:30 A.M, making it opposite from the elementary school students whose brains are actually more active in the early morning hours. So why is it that Elementary schools start later, and high schools start earlier?

Clearly, the school board needs to re-evaluate a few things regarding time schedules, and something needs to change immediately.
