Reading (such as novels and short stories) is more enjoyable than watching movies.

“Books?” “What are books?” “Ew..I hate reading.” “I’ll wait until the movie comes out.”

As reported on The Washington Post, “the share of Americans who read for pleasure on a given day has fallen by more than 30 percent since 2004, according to the latest American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2004, roughly 28 percent of Americans age 15 and older read for pleasure on a given day. Last year, the figure was about 19 percent.”As years go on, fewer people are reading books. We prefer spending our time texting, on social media, and online. Instead of reading a book, we would rather wait for the movie. Most people feel that they don’t have time to sit down and read a book.

However, here are some reasons as to why reading is more enjoyable than watching movies.

  • READING IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN
    • Increases the blood flow and improves connectivity in the brain
  • READING MAKES YOU A BETTER WRITER
    • While reading, your brain is exposed to good writing techniques and vocabulary
  • READING CHALLENGES YOUR IMAGINATION
    • Unlike movies, while you are reading you are putting yourself in the book and this helps improve your imagination (appearances, emotions and surroundings)
  • BETTER MEMORY
    • As you are retaining information from the book, you are using your memory muscle
  • IT’S FUN
    • You can choose the type of genre of like and it can be relaxing, funny, exciting, thrilling and many more

Personally speaking, I believe reading is more enjoyable than watching movies. There’s something about imagining myself in a book and opening my mind that makes reading very entertaining.
