You have probably been to the beach before, either near it or in it. At the beach, in front of you is one of the biggest mysteries of our planet. The ocean covers about 70% of earth and yet we have only discovered a little over 5% of it. The moon’s surface has been mapped more thoroughly than our entire ocean.

So why can’t we map our ocean? First, it is very expensive to map the ocean floor. Compared to NASA, the budget of  the (International Ocean Discovery Program) IODP is nearly nothing. The IODP gets about $48 million, while NASA receives about $18 billion.

The IODP map the ocean by using sonar, not radar. The ocean absorbs electromagnetic waves that radar produces so we can not get an accurate picture of the seafloor with it. Sonar, on the other hand, uses sounds and echoes to get a accurate picture. Although, it takes a while for the sound to go to the ocean floor and then bounce back to the surface.

The IODP not only maps the ocean, but drills into it as well. They ensure that drilling would be safe for workers and safe for the wildlife beforehand. If the area has not been mapped and checked over for hazard, it is illegal to drill. Drilling helps us find not only Earth’s biological, chemical and geological history, but it may help us see the future of the ecosystem. Right now they are on an expedition off the east coast of New Zealand.

In addition, the US has the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), this group helps preserve the environment of the water and prevents harm to it.
