Tip 1 – Analyze and thoroughly read the prompt given.

Take several minutes to carefully read and dissect the prompt. If needed, divide the prompt into different sections and look at each line one by one. Analyze the prompt and ask yourself, “Why would the admissions officer ask this prompt?” Try to figure out what an admissions officer would like to read and determine whether or not they would find your essay interesting. Then take some time away from the prompt, coming back later to look at it with fresh eyes. Read the prompt one more time to make sure that you understand it completely.

Tip 2 – Organize Your Writing

Before you start to write, brainstorm all your ideas and form an outline, including how long each paragraph is going to be in order to fulfill the word count limit. In the outline, you should figure out the main points of each paragraph and bullet some ideas that can fall into the categories. Even though creating an outline may be time consuming, at the end it can only benefit you. Once the outline is complete, it’s time for you to decide when you’re going to start writing. Whether it’s a paragraph a day or you plan to take a weekend to write the whole thing, take some time to create a schedule, which will give you some motivation to start to write.

Tip 3 – Use Proper Vocabulary Words

Make sure you use college level vocabulary words. Make sure the words you pick fit the essay and give the sentence meaning. Avoid overdoing it. Advanced vocabulary should be used to give your essay some flavor but don’t season it too much. Essays that contain to many advanced words may sound pompous and would not be taken seriously.

Tip 4 – Write Succinctly

Write consistently and thoroughly in order to express to the admissions officers that you are able to organize your thoughts and are capable of writing a well developed essay.

Tip 5 – Don’t Be Afraid to Have Your Essay Read By Others

You should have others look at your essay before submitting it. Having looked at your own essay for a long period of time can blind you from seeing a mistake. That’s why you need fresh eyes to see it and give you feedback. Make sure you ask someone with personal experience in the college process or a teacher. However, don’t ask more than three people to revise your essay as it can confuse you.

Good Luck Writing Your Essay!
